Xenoestrogens and Perimenopause: What They Are and How to Reduce Your Exposure

Have you ever wondered why your perimenopause symptoms seem worse despite eating well, exercising regularly and doing everything you're supposed to do?
There's a piece of this puzzle that doesn't get enough attention. It's called xenoestrogens. And once you understand what they are and where they come from, a lot of things start to make sense.
This post explains what xenoestrogens are, how they affect hormones in perimenopause specifically, where we're most commonly exposed to them and what you can practically do to reduce your exposure without overhauling your entire life.
A note before we start: the evidence on xenoestrogens is growing but some studies are still emerging and much of the foundational research has been conducted in animals. I'll be clear throughout about the strength of the evidence so you can make informed decisions rather than alarmed ones.
What are xenoestrogens?
Xenoestrogens are synthetic or natural chemical compounds that mimic oestrogen in the body. The word xeno comes from the Greek for foreign, so xenoestrogens are essentially foreign oestrogens.
They belong to a broader category called endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), substances that interfere with the body's hormonal system. Xenoestrogens specifically bind to oestrogen receptors in cells, mimicking the effects of the body's own oestrogen and disrupting normal hormonal signalling.
A 2024 review published in PMC confirmed that xenoestrogens interact directly with oestrogen receptors and can disrupt the transmission of cellular signals, with effects that are particularly significant at times of hormonal change such as puberty, pregnancy and the menopausal transition. (1)
Why do xenoestrogens matter more in perimenopause?
During perimenopause, oestrogen levels fluctuate erratically before eventually declining. This fluctuation already creates a complex and sensitive hormonal environment. Adding external oestrogen-like signals from xenoestrogens into this picture can compound the disruption.
A landmark longitudinal study published in Environmental International in 2024, using data from 751 women in the Midlife Women's Health Study, found that urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations were associated with changes in sex hormone levels including oestradiol, testosterone and progesterone across the menopausal transition. Women with higher phthalate exposure showed measurable differences in their hormonal profiles over four annual study visits. (2)
A 2024 review also noted that women in their late 30s and early 40s may notice that hormonal symptoms intensify during perimenopause in the context of xenoestrogen exposure, and that these effects may be particularly significant in later years when endogenous oestrogen levels drop and cumulative xenoestrogen exposure is at its highest. (1)
Beyond direct hormonal effects, xenoestrogens can affect the gut microbiome. Research has shown that BPA, phthalates and other xenoestrogens may alter the microbiome's composition, which in turn affects oestrogen metabolism through what is known as the estrobolome, the collection of gut bacteria responsible for processing and clearing oestrogen from the body. Where do xenoestrogens come from?
The challenging reality is that xenoestrogens are widespread in modern life. Here are the most significant sources:
Plastics - BPA and phthalates
Bisphenol A (BPA) is found in many hard plastics and the lining of food tins. It has a chemical structure similar to oestradiol and can bind to oestrogen receptors. Humans are exposed to BPA primarily through ingestion from plastic food containers and through dermal absorption. (4)
Phthalates are used to make plastics flexible and appear in food packaging, cling film and many plastic containers. Both BPA and phthalates act as xenoestrogens by binding to oestrogen receptors and disrupting metabolic signalling pathways. (5)
Heating food in plastic significantly increases the migration of these chemicals into food. Glass, stainless steel and ceramic are the safest choices for food and drink storage.
Thermal receipts
Thermal paper receipts printed at supermarkets and shops are coated with BPA. Research has found that people who handle receipts frequently have significantly elevated levels of BPA in their urine. (6) Declining printed receipts where possible is a simple and effective swap.
Personal care products - parabens and synthetic fragrance
Parabens are preservatives used widely in cosmetics, shampoos, moisturisers, deodorants and sunscreens. They're among the most widely detected xenoestrogens in human tissue and have been found in blood, breast tissue, breast milk, placenta and urine. (7)
In vitro and animal studies have reported that parabens demonstrate oestrogenic activity and the ability to stimulate growth in human breast cell lines. (8) A particularly striking study published in 2025 found that just 28 days of reduced exposure to xenoestrogens via cosmetics, switching to products free from parabens, phthalates and fragrance, led to a more normalised cellular profile in breast tissue. The researchers described these results as astonishing. (9)
Synthetic fragrance is listed on product labels simply as 'fragrance' or 'parfum' and can contain dozens of undisclosed chemicals including phthalates. Choosing fragrance-free or naturally scented products is one of the most impactful changes you can make.

Scented candles and air fresheners
This is one that surprises many people. Scented candles, wax melts and plug-in air fresheners are a significant source of synthetic fragrance chemicals including phthalates in the home. Unlike skincare products which are absorbed through the skin, these chemicals are inhaled directly into the lungs, making them an important source of exposure to consider.
Choosing candles made with natural wax such as soy or beeswax and scented with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance is a simple swap. Using an essential oil diffuser instead of plug-in air fresheners achieves the same result with significantly less chemical exposure.
Pesticides on non-organic produce
Many pesticides used in conventional agriculture contain xenoestrogen compounds. Switching to organic for the highest-pesticide fruits and vegetables, rather than all produce, is a practical and cost-effective approach.
Tap water
Traces of pharmaceutical oestrogens and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals can pass through water treatment systems. A water filter with activated carbon or reverse osmosis can reduce exposure from this source.
Tinned food
Most food tins are lined with BPA-containing epoxy resin. Acidic foods like tomatoes leach more BPA from tin linings than other foods. Choosing glass jars or fresh and frozen alternatives where possible reduces exposure from this source.
How can you reduce xenoestrogen exposure practically?
The goal is meaningful reduction, not perfection. You cannot eliminate all xenoestrogen exposure in the modern world. The aim is to make simple swaps that reduce your overall burden over time.

How does the body clear xenoestrogens and how can you support this?
The liver and gut are your primary oestrogen clearance pathways. Supporting both is one of the most impactful things you can do nutritionally alongside reducing your exposure.
Support liver detoxification
The liver processes oestrogen in two phases. Cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts contain a compound called indole-3-carbinol which supports healthy oestrogen metabolism through the liver. Eating cruciferous vegetables three to four times a week is a practical and evidence-based way to support this pathway.
Support the gut and estrobolome
The estrobolome is the collection of gut bacteria responsible for metabolising and clearing oestrogen. A healthy, diverse gut microbiome supports efficient oestrogen clearance. A disrupted microbiome can allow oestrogen to be reabsorbed rather than excreted.
Fibre is your most important tool here. Fibre binds to oestrogen in the gut and carries it out of the body. Aiming for 30g of fibre daily from a diverse range of plant foods supports both gut health and oestrogen clearance. Fermented foods including kefir, natural yoghurt and sauerkraut support microbiome diversity.
A note on the evidence
The research on xenoestrogens is genuinely developing and it's important to be honest about where we are. The evidence that xenoestrogens can bind to oestrogen receptors and disrupt hormonal signalling is well established. The evidence linking specific xenoestrogen exposures to specific health outcomes in humans is growing but still emerging in many areas.
What we can say with confidence is that cumulative exposure to multiple xenoestrogens simultaneously is an area of increasing research interest. And the precautionary principle applies: where practical swaps are simple and low cost, reducing exposure makes sense even where the human evidence is still developing.
This is not a reason to be alarmed. It's a reason to make thoughtful, gradual changes where you can.
